Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications was founded in 1950 and is one of several post and telecommunications universities established and prioritized by the state. The university, jointly built by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Chongqing Municipality, is a high-level teaching and research university with distinctive features, prominent advantages and significant influence in the field of information and communication. The university is located in the Nanshan Scenic Area of Chongqing, covering an area of 3,800 mu. It has 24,000 students, including 3,200 postgraduate students. There are more than 1,700 faculty members, including over 30 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Poland, India, and more than 150 part-time or honorary professors. The university has 16 colleges, 3 research institutes, 53 undergraduate programs, 38 master's programs and 2 doctoral programs.

The university adheres to an open education approach and focuses on international cooperation and exchange. IT has academic exchanges, joint education programs and research and development bases with more than 50 universities in various countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Canada, Germany, South Korea, Singapore, as well as in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It also collaborates with leading international IT companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Cisco, Microsoft and Oracle. The university enrolls Chinese government Scholarship recipients, Chongqing Mayor's Scholarship recipients, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications President's Scholarship recipients, as well as self-funded international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese. Currently, there are nearly 600 international students from 58 countries studying on campus. The university has hosted or organized many high-level international academic conferences and received foreign dignitaries, business elites, and renowned experts and scholars to give lectures or visit the university.

The school adheres to independent innovation and is a national advanced collective in information industry science and technology innovation and a national high-tech industrialization demonstration project base. It is known as "the birthplace of China's digital communication" and "the cradle of China's information and communication talents". The school is at the forefront of international research in communication networks and testing technology, new generation broadband wireless mobile communication, computer networks and information security, intelligent information processing, industrial Ethernet and sensor networks, advanced manufacturing and information technology, microelectronics technology and special chip design, and has undertaken more than 1,000 national and provincial-level scientific research projects. It has won the International Technology Invention Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and its major scientific and technological work indicators rank among the top 100 universities in China.
