About the university

Hebei Medical University, formerly known as Beiyang Medical School, was founded in Tianjin in 1894 by Li Hongzhang, the governor-general of Zhili and Minister of Beiyang. It was the first government-run western medical college in modern China. After the Xinhai Revolution, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China issued Order No. 16 in October 1912. According to this order, Beiyang Medical School was renamed Zhili Public Medical Specialized School in 1913 and began to admit undergraduate students. In 1915, the school moved to Baoding. The school was forced to close on July 7, 1937, when the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression broke out in full force. The school resumed enrollment in January 1946.
