Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), which is under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, has three campuses in Harbin, Weihai and Shenzhen. It is a key national university with a focus on science and engineering and coordinated development of multiple disciplines including science, engineering, management, literature, economics, law and art.
Founded in 1920, it was designated as one of the two model universities in the country to learn from foreign higher education models in 1951 and was included in the first batch of six key universities in China (the only one outside Beijing) in 1954. It was the first university in New China to offer a five-year undergraduate program and a three-year postgraduate program, with its graduates directly awarded the title of engineer. It was hailed as the cradle of engineers. The university was included in the first batch of key universities under the 211 Project in 1996, was identified as one of the first nine universities under the National Key Construction Project in 1999, and was included in the list of A-class universities under the Double First-Class Initiative in 2017.
Over the long course of its operation, the school has developed its motto of "Strict standards, diligent Work", cultivated a large number of outstanding talents with its down-to-earth and rigorous academic style, and created abundant scientific research achievements with its pursuit of excellence and innovative spirit. The school has made full use of the advantages of interdisciplinary integration and has formed a relatively complete discipline system consisting of key disciplines, emerging disciplines and supporting disciplines, covering many disciplines such as science, engineering, management, literature, economics, law and art. The university has 9 first-level national key disciplines and 6 second-level national key disciplines. In the third round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 10 first-level disciplines of the university ranked among the top five in the country, with the discipline of mechanics ranking first in the country. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, Harbin Institute of Technology had 17 disciplines rated as A-class, ranking sixth in the country in terms of discipline excellence rate (the proportion of A-class disciplines to authorized disciplines), eighth in terms of the number of A-class disciplines, and second in terms of the number of engineering A-class disciplines. Materials science, engineering, Physics, chemistry, Computer Science, Environment and ecology, mathematics, biology and biochemistry, agricultural sciences, clinical medicine, and Social Sciences in general are among the top 1% globally in ESI. Materials science is among the top 1‰ globally, and engineering is among the top 10,000th globally in ESI.
The school vigorously promotes the patriotic spirit of "remembering responsibility and devoting wholeheartedly"; The spirit of seeking truth from facts and upholding science; The spirit of unity that embraces all rivers and collaborates to tackle problems; The spirit of "self-improvement and innovation" and the spirit of "Eight Hundred Heroes" of "Remembering the country's trust, shouldering the arduous mission, taking root in Northeast China, working hard to start a business, striving and devoting all one's life to the industrialization of the People's Republic" have built a high-quality teaching staff. It has laid a solid talent foundation for the university to build itself into a world-class university with Chinese characteristics. The university has 38 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including 18 shared academicians), 9 National teaching masters, 44 Changjiang Scholars, 6 young scholars, 52 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 45 recipients of the National Natural Science Foundation of China's Excellent Young Scholars Fund. 38 "Ten Thousand Talents Program" leading talents (including 4 national "Ten Thousand Talents Program" teaching masters), 18 young top-notch talents, 31 "Thousand Talents Program" National candidates, 12 "973 Program" Chief scientists, 29 "Innovation Talent Promotion Program", 185 "New Century Excellent Talents"; 6 National Natural Science Foundation of China Innovation Groups, 12 Ministry of Education Science and Technology Innovation Teams, and 4 Ministry of Science and Technology Key Field Innovation Teams; Six national teaching teams and four research teaching innovation teams of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
Over the years, the school has maintained its aerospace characteristics, established the first aerospace college among Chinese universities, launched China's first small satellite independently developed under the leadership of a university, It was the first in China to achieve satellite-ground laser link communication, the first to achieve fully automatic laser beam and target coupling guidance (Shenguang-III range photoelectric and control system), the first computer that could play chess and talk, the first new system radar, the first arc welding robot and spot welding robot, the first nanosatellar independently designed, developed and controlled by university students, and the first to perform on the Spring Festival Gala Taiwan's college student robot dance team achieved the world 's first high-speed laser two-way communication test from a high-orbit satellite to earth, broke through key technologies of the support structure system of the world' s largest aperture radio telescope, supported the successful "eye" of China 's sky eye, developed space manipulator achieved the world' s first human-machine collaborative in-orbit maintenance scientific test on Tiangong-2 The new generation of magnetically focused Hall electric thrusters was the first in the world to be applied in space, revealing the structure of HIV virus-related factors for the first time and bringing China's AIDS structural biology research to the forefront of the world. The successful launch of Longjiang-2 became the world 's first microsatellite to independently complete Earth-moon transfer, near-moon braking, and lunar orbit flight. It is building China's first major science project for simulating extreme space environments, participating in 14 major national science and technology projects including the Lunar exploration program, ranking among the top universities in China in terms of the number of annual authorized patents, total research funds and the number of three national science and technology awards, and seven projects have been selected as the top ten scientific and technological advances in Chinese universities for six consecutive years. A large number of achievements have contributed to major missions such as the maiden flights of the Long March-7 and Long March-5 rockets, the manned flights of Tiangong-2 and Shenzhou-11, and have won several awards including the China Manned Space Engineering Collaboration Contribution Award, the China Manned Space Engineering Outstanding Contribution Collective Award, and the China Manned Space Engineering Outstanding Contributor Award. It is becoming a renowned science and engineering university and a prestigious aerospace university both at home and abroad.
