China Three Gorges University was formed by the merger of the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (Yichang) and the former Hubei Three Gorges University on June 29, 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education. The university's history can be traced back to 1923. It began offering undergraduate education in 1978 and postgraduate education and international student education in 1996. The school has the authority to confer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees and is eligible to admit Chinese Government Scholarship students (CSC). In 2009, the Ministry of Water Resources and the People's Government of Hubei Province signed an agreement to jointly build China Three Gorges University. In 2010, the university was awarded the title of "Advanced Unit for Expanding Opening-up" by the Hubei Provincial Government; In 2014, the school was awarded the title of "Demonstration Base for International Students in China" by the Ministry of Education. At present, the university has become a comprehensive institution with distinct characteristics and advantages in hydropower, strong overall educational strength and a certain social reputation.
The university has two national experimental teaching demonstration centers; Two national engineering practice education centers; 1 Hubei Three Gorges Landslide National Field Scientific Observation and Research Station, 1 Key Laboratory of Geological Disasters in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of the Ministry of Education, 1 Engineering Technology Research Center of Ecology and Environment in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of the Ministry of Education, 1 Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center of Geological Disasters and Ecological Environment in the Three Gorges Area There are seven provincial and ministerial key laboratories, namely disaster prevention and mitigation, hydropower engineering construction and management, hydropower machinery and equipment design and maintenance, natural products research and utilization, cascade hydropower station operation and control, intelligent visual monitoring of hydropower engineering, tumor microcirculation and immunotherapy, and two former State power Corporation key laboratories, namely Hydropower Station Simulation and geotechnical engineering research center. There are 19 teaching and experimental (training) centers and 8 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers. There are more than 160 practical teaching bases and industry-university-research cooperation bases both on and off campus.
The school is committed to promoting development through openness, conducting multi-level and wide-ranging international cooperation and exchanges, adhering to the path of internationalization, drawing on advanced foreign educational concepts and experiences, introducing high-quality educational resources, promoting educational reform and development, focusing on cultivating talents with an international educational background, and enhancing the school's international status, influence and competitiveness. In 2011, the school became one of the 52 institutions in the country with the qualification to recruit international students for the undergraduate program in clinical medicine (taught in English), and was approved by the Ministry of Education for the Sino-foreign cooperative undergraduate program in electrical engineering and automation. In 2013, it was granted the qualification to admit students to Hong Kong without examination. In 2014, the Ministry of Education approved the Sino-foreign cooperative undergraduate program in Tourism management. In recent years, the school has invited three Nobel laureates to give lectures at our school, and receives an average of 70 foreign delegations of nearly 1,000 people each year. The school has extensive international cooperation and exchanges, and maintains close contact with envoys from the United States, France, Nepal, Maldives, South Korea, India, Pakistan and other countries. In May 2013, the "Famous Scientists Give Lectures in Hubei - Wuhan Forum" was successfully held. The visits of world-renowned scholars and government officials greatly promoted international cooperation and exchanges at our university and expanded its international reputation. In 2013, the university held the "Stay in China - Sunshine Sports Tour for International Students in China - Kyushu Competition Fifth Region (China Three Gorges University)" event. The school also regularly hosts events such as the Peach Blossom Festival and the "Happy Friday (T.G.I.F)" English Culture Salon, which greatly enriches the international atmosphere of the school. At present, the entire school is implementing the educational planning outline, promoting the construction and development of connotation, vigorously implementing the four major strategies of characteristic development, reform and innovation, open education and cultural leadership, striving to achieve the educational goal of "a high-level comprehensive university with distinct hydropower characteristics".
