Xiangtan University was founded in 1958. It is a comprehensive national key university, a "Double First-Class" university, and a university jointly built by THE people 's government of Hunan Province and the Ministry of Education. It is one of the few local universities in China to be included in authoritative international university rankings such as THE and USNEWS.
The university has a graduate school and 24 colleges and teaching departments, covering ten disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. Mathematics is a world-class discipline, and six disciplines including chemistry, materials science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and environment/ecology have entered the top 1% of global universities and research institutions in ESI rankings. It has one world-class construction discipline, three national key disciplines, one world-class cultivation discipline, and 13 key disciplines of Hunan Province during the 14th Five-Year Plan. There are 18 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 33 first-level discipline master's programs, 22 master's professional degree categories, and 16 postdoctoral research stations; There are 41 national first-class undergraduate programs, 15 provincial programs, 11 national characteristic programs, 23 provincial programs, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot program, 8 provincial programs, and 12 programs that have passed the national engineering education program accreditation.
The university adheres to the path of open education and is a member of the Ministry of Education's "China-Africa University 20+20 Cooperation Program", "China-Africa University 100 Cooperation Program", "China-Africa University Alliance", "Yangtze River - Volga River University Alliance" and "Belt and Road" University alliance, and has established Confucius Institutes in cooperation with the University of Leon in Spain and the University of McReere in Uganda. It is one of the first universities in Hunan Province to be qualified to recruit international students, and it is a recipient of the Chinese Government Scholarship and the International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship. It is also a university certified for quality of higher education for international students. It has established extensive exchange and cooperation relations with over 80 universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan, and has carried out more than 30 international cooperative training programs.
