Northeast Electric Power University, founded in 1949, is the first electric power engineering school established in the People's Republic of China. The school is committed to cultivating talents, conducting scientific research, providing social services, inheriting and innovating culture. It actively ADAPTS to the demands of the national power industry and the economic construction of Jilin Province, and has formed a relatively complete discipline system with power characteristics as the main focus and multi-disciplinary integration. The university has 15 colleges and 51 undergraduate programs, covering nine disciplines including engineering, science, management, literature, law, economics, education, art and interdisciplinary studies. There are 3 postdoctoral research stations, 5 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 2 doctoral professional degree categories, 4 self-established interdisciplinary disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 15 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 4 self-established second-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, and 11 master professional degree categories. The university's engineering discipline is in the top 2‰ of ESI globally, and its chemistry discipline is in the top 1 percent of ESI globally; Instrument Science, Energy Science and Engineering, and Power electronics Engineering are included in the 2024 Shanghairanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. Electrical Engineering is included in Jilin Province's "National Double First-Class Discipline Cultivation Action Plan"; It now has 6 characteristic high-level discipline clusters, 9 characteristic high-level disciplines and 11 joint innovation platforms of first-class disciplines in Jilin Province. The university currently has more than 24,000 full-time students.
The school has more than 1,500 staff members, including nearly 600 with senior professional titles, two of the first batch of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", three of the national outstanding professional and technical talents, one of the "Chang Jiang Scholars Program" distinguished professors, three of the National outstanding young and middle-aged experts, and five of the National Talents of the "Thousand Talents Program". Three young scholars under the Changjiang Scholars Program, one recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 40 recipients of the Special Government Allowance of The State Council, and one National teaching master. It has two innovation teams under the "Chang Jiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program" of the Ministry of Education, three national teaching teams, and one of the first batch of "Huang Danyan-style Teacher Teaching Teams in National Universities".
The school adheres to the central position of teaching work without wavering and actively builds and continuously optimizes the system for cultivating innovative talents. There are five national characteristic majors, 13 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, five national first-class undergraduate courses, four national excellent courses, four national excellent resource-sharing courses, two national experimental teaching demonstration centers, one national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, and ten Jilin Provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers. In recent years, the school has won three national awards for outstanding teaching achievements. The school is a national base for cultural quality education of college students, a national base for training and research of social sports talents, one of the first construction units of the National engineering practice education Center, a pilot university of the "Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Program", and a national base for continuing education of professional and technical personnel.
The school has always adhered to the scientific and technological innovation policy of focusing on the frontiers of world science and technology, the main economic battlefield, and the major demands of the country, and has continuously improved its academic research level and scientific and technological innovation capacity. The university has two national and local joint engineering laboratories, two key laboratories (engineering research centers) of the Ministry of Education, one national university science park, five collaborative innovation centers for major demands of Jilin Province, two international science and technology cooperation bases of Jilin Province, and 39 key laboratories, engineering research centers and liberal arts bases of Jilin Province. In recent years, the university has undertaken more than 3,000 research projects at all levels and of all kinds, represented by the National Key Research and Development Program, the National Science and Technology Major Project, the National Major Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Project, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China Key Project; Four second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and more than 160 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards including the Jilin Province Science and Technology Special Contribution Award and the Jilin Province Achievement Transformation Contribution Award; More than 800 invention patents have been authorized, making significant contributions to promoting scientific and technological progress as well as the construction and development of the power industry and the regional economy. The school has carried out various forms of scientific and technological and academic exchanges with universities or research institutions in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Germany and other countries. In 1998, it was approved to train international students. In 2000, the Degree Committee of The State Council approved the school to cooperate with Utah State University in the United States to offer undergraduate education programs in international economics and trade. In 2012, the Ministry of Education approved a joint undergraduate program in Electrical Engineering and Automation with Strathclyde University in the UK. In 2011, the university was approved as a recipient of the China Scholarship Council's Overseas Study Program for Young backbone teachers. In 2013, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as a recipient of Chinese government scholarships for international students. In 2023, the university will establish China Electric Power University in Uzbekistan in partnership with Samarkand International University of Technology.
