Education and teaching are the foundation of the school. For more than 70 years since its establishment, the school has developed a distinct educational feature of "serving basic education" and is hailed as "the cradle of people's teachers". In the 1950s, Cheng Fangwu, a renowned educator and former principal of our school, put forward the idea of serving primary and secondary education, and our school pioneered correspondence education for normal universities in China. In the 1980s, the school took the initiative to serve rural basic education and blazed a trail known as the "Changbai Mountain Road" in the field of basic education. In the 1990s, the "Excellent Teacher Project" was implemented to cultivate outstanding teachers for basic education; In the new century, the "Educator Training Project" was launched, the "U-G-S teacher Education model" was explored, and the only provincial and ministerial co-construction collaborative innovation center for teacher education was approved nationwide. The "Excellent Teacher Project" and the "New Model of U-G-S Teacher Education" have successively won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education. The National Experimental Center for Basic Education, the Training Center for Kindergarten Principals of the Ministry of Education, and the Training Center for Teachers of Northeast Normal Universities of the Ministry of Education are located in our school.
The school is based on scientific research and has 21 national and ministerial-level innovation platforms, including national key laboratories, national engineering laboratories, national field scientific observation and research stations, national and local joint engineering laboratories, national Center for Applied Mathematics, key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, and engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education. There are 10 ministry-level research platforms for humanities and social sciences, including key research bases for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education and research centers for country and regional studies of the Ministry of Education. In recent years, research achievements have won four second prizes of the National Natural Science Award, including two in materials science, one in statistics and one in chemistry. Six first prizes of the Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Awards for Outstanding scientific Research Achievements in Higher Education Institutions (Humanities and Social Sciences) have been won, including four in history, one in Marxist theory and one in education.
The university has established cooperative and exchange relations with 275 universities and research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Korea, Japan and Russia. The university has six academic innovation bases and four Confucius Institutes. It has also established Northeast Normal University Rutges-Newark College in cooperation with Rutgers, New Jersey State University in the United States and led 12 universities from China and Mongolia to form the China-Mongolia University Alliance. The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other central ministries have established the "International Chinese Language Teacher Training Base", "Chinese Language Education Base", "Education Foreign Aid Base" and "China-Asean Education and Training Center" at our university. The preparatory school for Chinese students to study in Japan, jointly established by the governments of China and Japan and located at our school, is an important base for serving the national strategy of strengthening the country through talent and promoting people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Japan.
The school has a group of renowned experts and scholars both at home and abroad. A large number of outstanding talents have stood out in the field of education. Such as Lu Jiaxi, a teacher from Baotou No. 9 High School who won the first prize of the National Natural Science Award for solving world-famous mathematical problems; Feng Zhiyuan, a teacher who moved China and went to the border; Guo Lihua, a national model teacher; Shi Ningzhong, Gao Hang and Dou Guimei, national models of teaching and nurturing; Ma Xianhua, one of the top ten teachers in the country.
