China University of Petroleum (East China) is located in Qingdao, a charming sailing city and coastal city with a high reputation. The campus is located in Qingdao West Coast New Area, a newly established national new district in 2014. Among the full-time faculty members are 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5 recipients of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", 3 Changjiang Scholars, and 5 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. One chief scientist of the 973 Program, 11 recipients of the National "Thousand Talents Project", 20 recipients of the "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program", four recipients of the China Youth Science and Technology Award, and 11 recipients of the Ministry of Education's Young Teacher Award, the Ho Ying-dong Education Foundation's Young Teacher Support and Young Teacher Award; Two Taishan Scholars Climbing Program, 11 Taishan Scholars Distinguished Professors and Overseas Distinguished Experts, and three Taishan Scholars Young Experts; 15 "Outstanding Middle-aged and Young Experts of Shandong Province". 15 national and provincial teaching masters, and 6 National Model teachers and National Excellent teachers. One team was selected for the first batch of "National University Huang Danyan-style Teacher Teams", three innovation teams were selected for the "Chang Jiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program" of the Ministry of Education, two innovation teams were selected for the "Shandong Province Excellent Innovation Team", and one discipline was selected for the "Shandong Province Taishan Scholars Advantage and Characteristic Discipline Talent Team Support Program".

The university has five national key disciplines, namely mineral Prospecting and Exploration, Oil and Gas Well Engineering, Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Oil and Gas storage and transportation engineering, as well as two national key (cultivated) disciplines, namely Earth Exploration and information Technology and Industrial catalysis. Engineering, chemistry, materials science and earth science are among the top 1% of ESI global subject rankings, and petroleum and natural gas engineering and geological resources and geological engineering are included in the national "Double First-Class" construction program. Six first-level disciplines, namely Petroleum and natural gas Engineering, Geological Resources and geological Engineering, Safety Science and Engineering, Geology, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Geophysics, have entered the top ten in the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education. There are 11 postdoctoral research stations, 14 first-level disciplines for doctoral degree authorization, 3 second-level disciplines for doctoral degree authorization, 1 category of doctoral professional degree authorization, 32 first-level disciplines for master's degree authorization, 2 second-level disciplines for master's degree authorization, 9 categories of master's professional degree authorization, and 63 undergraduate programs. The disciplines and specialties cover all areas of the petroleum and petrochemical industry, and the overall level of the main petroleum disciplines is leading in the country.

The school actively conducts international (Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) academic and cultural exchanges and has established substantive cooperative exchange relations with more than 140 institutions of higher learning and academic institutions in 31 countries and regions including the United States, France, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and Russia. In 2017, it officially joined the Belt and Road University Alliance and promoted substantive cooperation and exchanges with its member universities through platforms such as the China-Eu Engineering Education Alliance, the China-Russia Engineering University Alliance, the China-Asean Education and Training Alliance, and the Northeast Asia University Alliance around the Yellow Sea. The university has established a Confucius Institute in collaboration with the Metallurgical Institute of Tajikistan. The university has four "111 Project" innovation and intelligence bases such as the "Oil and Gas Field Development Project", nearly ten international joint research centers such as the "International Training and Consultation Center for Advanced Petroleum Technology" and the China-Saudi Arabia Refining Technology Cooperation Research Center, and seven Qingdao International Science and Technology Cooperation Bases.

The university offers four English-taught undergraduate programs, namely Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, and Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, and four English-taught master's programs, namely Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Geological Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Mechanical Engineering. All other programs taught in Chinese are open to international students. The school currently has over 1,200 international students from more than 90 countries around the world. The student categories include doctoral students, master's students, undergraduate students, exchange students, language students, professional students, etc. Degree students account for 78.5% of the total number. The students are mainly in specialized fields such as petroleum engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, oil and gas storage and transportation engineering, geological resources and geological engineering, and international economics and trade.

The school has been committed to improving the learning and living environment for students. The school library has 3 million volumes of paper books and 7.38 million digital books, including 1.65 million e-books. The school has more than 350 classrooms for teaching, academic reports, seminars and design, and more than 20 student apartments, including one dedicated international student apartment with multimedia classrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, gyms, etc. Four large multi-storey dining halls offer hundreds of delicious dishes, and the school has a multi-functional modern gymnasium with more than 60 indoor and outdoor sports fields, which can meet the needs of teaching, competition and student activities for sports such as football, basketball, volleyball and tennis. In addition, the school has a hospital, campus shuttle, career guidance center and more than 130 student organizations, providing comprehensive learning and living services for students on campus.

The school is an important base for scientific research in the petroleum and petrochemical industry. It has strong capabilities in basic theoretical research and applied research, and is at the leading domestic and advanced international level in more than 10 research fields. It has 69 national and provincial key laboratories and research institutions, including the State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil, the National Engineering Laboratory of Marine Geophysical Prospecting and Exploration Equipment, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for New Technologies in Oil and Gas Processing, and the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for New Equipment and Technologies in Petroleum and Petrochemical Industry. The university attaches great importance to the industrialization of scientific and technological achievements and has established a national university science park. The university's enterprises, Shandong Shida Technology Group Co., Ltd. and Shandong Shida Shenghua Chemical Co., LTD., are both national high-tech enterprises and important research, pilot and industrial test bases in the petroleum and petrochemical industry. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the university undertook more than 7,833 research projects, with 2.836 billion yuan in research funds in place and 913 million yuan in longitudinal funds. There were major breakthroughs in undertaking national research tasks and high-level major projects, including 147 national-level projects such as the 863 Program, the 973 Program, the Science and Technology Support Program, and the Major Oil and Gas Project.
