Nanjing University of the Arts is the only comprehensive art college in Jiangsu Province and the earliest independent higher art institution in China that has continued to this day. It originated from the Shanghai Academy of Painting and Fine Arts, which was founded in 1912 by Mr. Liu Haisu, the founder of art education in China, along with his fellow painters. The school is located in the main urban area of Nanjing, where history and modernity blend together, and is situated in the urban cultural circle where tradition and fashion blend. To the south lies the legendary Stone city, to the north is the scenic Gulin Park, to the east is the fast and convenient Huju Avenue, and to the west is the scenic belt of the Qinhuai River with its OARS and lights. The campus is beautiful and well-arranged. The ancient buildings have upturned eaves and painted beams and pillars, while the modern buildings are bright and smooth, with a unique style.
In 2011, it was granted the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees in all five first-level disciplines under the discipline of art, namely art Theory, music and dance, drama and Film, Fine arts, and Design. In 2012, all five first-level disciplines of art studies were selected as key disciplines of Jiangsu Province during the 12th Five-Year Plan, and postdoctoral research stations of the five first-level disciplines of Art studies were approved. Art Studies (first-level discipline) is a provincial national key discipline cultivation point and a provincial university advantage discipline, and Fine arts is a national key discipline cultivation point. Techniques of Chinese Painting, Techniques of Oil Painting, Fundamentals of Design, History of Chinese Art are national excellent courses, Animation, Art Design, Painting, Musicology and performance are National Characteristic specialties Construction points; The art design major and the discipline of Fine arts are national experimental zones for the cultivation of innovative talents in higher education institutions; "Digital Media Art Experimental Teaching Center" is a national experimental teaching demonstration center, and "Art Design Materials and Technology Laboratory" is a key laboratory of Jiangsu Province universities; 13 Jiangsu Province Brand and characteristic specialties (including construction points) : Music Performance (Chinese Musical instrument performance), Art Design, Painting, Composition and Composition Technology Theory, Musicology, Fine Arts, Industrial design, Painting, Art Design Studies, Performance, Recording Art, Fashion Design and Engineering, Drama and Film Literature; Seven provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers (including construction points), namely the Handicraft Course Experimental Teaching Laboratory, Digital Audio Teaching Laboratory, Printmaking Art Experimental Teaching Center, Film and Television Production Experimental Teaching Center, Industrial Design Experimental Teaching Center, Modern Sculpture Comprehensive Materials Experimental Teaching Center, and Virtual reality Art Practice Education Center.
The school has an art research institute, which consists of 14 research institutes. The Zijin Cultural and Creative Research Institute, established in March 2016, is one of the first new key high-end think tanks in Jiangsu Province. There are also performance institutions such as the Experimental Orchestra and the Youth Dance Troupe. "Art & Design" and "Music & Performance" are nationally published academic journals, both of which are "National Chinese Core Journals". Among them, "Art & Design" was selected as a CSSCI source journal in 2014. Over the past decade, the school's faculty and students have won numerous awards, including the Ministry of Education's Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award, the National 100 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations Award, the Gold Award of the National Art Exhibition, the Gold Award of the Golden Bell Award, the Gold Award of the Wenhua Award, the Gold Award of the National Vocal Competition, the Dance "Taoli Cup", and the National College Students' Art Exhibition. At the same time, more than 400 books and over 5,000 papers have been published, and major national projects, key national projects and provincial scientific research projects have been approved.
Today, Nanjing University of the Arts, nourished by the culture of the ancient capital of six dynasties and with the strength of Jiangsu, a major economic province, has united and forged ahead, and has become a comprehensive higher art institution with complete disciplines, diverse educational levels, strong faculty and advanced teaching facilities.
