Yangzhou University is a key comprehensive university under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, jointly built by the people 's government of Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Education. It was among the first universities in China to be granted doctoral and master' s degrees and was among the first to be merged. In 1992, the university was formed by the merger of six institutions: Yangzhou Normal College, Jiangsu Agricultural College, Yangzhou Institute of Technology, Yangzhou Medical College, Jiangsu College of Water Conservancy Engineering and Jiangsu College of Commerce. The school's history can be traced back to the Tongzhou Normal School and Tonghai Agricultural School, which were founded in 1902 by the renowned modern industrialist and educator Mr. Zhang Jian.
