Guizhou University was founded in 1902 and went through periods such as Guizhou University Hall, Provincial Guizhou University, National Guizhou Agricultural and Industrial College, and national Guizhou University. It was officially named Guizhou University in October 1950. In August 1997, it merged with Guizhou Agricultural College and other institutions. In August 2004, it merged with Guizhou University of Technology. After more than 120 years of development and construction, it has successively become a "211 Project" university, a "Double First-Class" university, and a "Ministry-Provincial Co-construction" university by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Guizhou Province; In 2021, the Guizhou Provincial Government Work Report explicitly proposed "strengthening Guizhou University" for the first time. In November of the same year, 11 departments including the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education jointly issued the "Implementation Plan for Strengthening Guizhou University", proposing to build Guizhou University into a first-class domestic and internationally renowned comprehensive high-level university in accordance with the requirements of "Chinese characteristics, world-class standards, Guizhou demands". In 2023, the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the provincial government decided to "concentrate on strengthening Guizhou University" to lead and drive the high-quality development of higher education in Guizhou. The university is also among the first batch of "National Model Universities for Party Building", the first batch of "National Civilized Campus", and a pilot unit for the Ministry of Education's comprehensive reform of "all-round education".

The school covers an area of 4,645.83 mu and has a teaching and experimental farm of 1,181.26 mu. The library has a total collection of over 4.07 million volumes and over 3.04 million e-books. The school offers a wide range of disciplines, including literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, law, education, art and interdisciplinary studies. It has 40 colleges and 34,944 full-time undergraduate students. More than 18,000 graduate students. There are more than 4,200 full-time staff members, including over 2,800 full-time teachers, among whom 62.65% have doctoral degrees.
