About the university

Fujian Normal University, located in Fuzhou, a historical and cultural city known as the "Land of the Sea", is a century-old provincial university with a long history and a great reputation. Fujian Normal University originated from the "Fujian Higher Normal School" founded by Mr. Chen Baochen, the imperial teacher of the Qing Dynasty, in 1907. After several reorganizations and mergers including South China Women's College of Arts and Sciences, Fujian Union University and Fujian Provincial Normal College, Fujian Normal College was established in 1953 and was renamed Fujian Normal University in 1972, a name that has been used ever since. Fujian Normal University was jointly established by the Fujian Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education in 2012. It was identified as a key high-level university in Fujian Province in 2014. In 2018 it was identified as a first-class university construction institution in Fujian Province. In 2022, it was identified as A Class A university in the second round of the "Double First-Class" initiative in Fujian Province.

The university actively takes advantage of its location in the core area of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and its proximity to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, and focuses on deepening international exchanges and cooperation. It has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 130 universities, research institutions and UNESCO in countries and regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia and Japan, and has established substantive cooperative relations with more than 40 universities in Taiwan. Overseas Chinese language education has taken shape and become distinctive. So far, 23 batches of 1,065 volunteers have been sent to 29 countries including the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and the United States. Two Confucius Institutes have been established in collaboration with Redstream University in the Philippines and Alaza University in Indonesia, which have had a positive impact both at home and abroad.

Fujian Normal University is a demonstration base for international students in China and a China-Asean education and training center, and is qualified to accept Chinese government scholarship students, Confucius Institute scholarship students and Fujian Provincial Government Scholarship students. Since 1984, the university has received more than 10,000 international students from over 40 countries including Japan, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Indonesia and Thailand, as well as students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese, and has trained a large number of Chinese language teachers for Southeast Asia and neighboring countries.
