Lanzhou Jiaotong University, founded in 1958, is the third railway university in China formed by the division of departments from Tangshan Railway College (now Southwest Jiaotong University) and Beijing Railway College (now Beijing Jiaotong University). The university is currently a co-construction institution of China State Railway Group Co., LTD., the National Railway Administration and the People's Government of Gansu Province, an authorized construction unit of the Confucius Institute at the University of Seville in Spain, a supported university under the Ministry of Education's "Central and Western Education Revitalization Plan", a selected university under the Ministry of Education's "Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Program", and a demonstration university for deepening Innovation and entrepreneurship education reform under the Ministry of Education. Gansu Province's high-level university and "First-Class discipline" construction university, approved by the Ministry of Education as a "three-to-one" counterpart support university for Tianjin University, Beijing Jiaotong University and Southwest Jiaotong University. The university is a demonstration base for international students of the Ministry of Education and has a large number of talent cultivation bases such as the National Language and Character Promotion Base, the National Railway Science Popularization Base, the National Beidou Science Popularization Base, the Ministry of Education Cultural Inheritance Base and the Northwest Region Minor Language Training Base.
History and Evolution
The school's predecessor can be traced back to the Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Official School established in 1896 and the Beijing Railway Management Training Institute established in 1909. In 1958, the Ministry of Railways decided to establish Lanzhou Railway College, the third railway undergraduate college in China, in Lanzhou. Five departments, namely Railway Transport, Railway Electrical Engineering, Railway Architecture, Railway Bridge and Tunnel, and Railway Machinery, with seven undergraduate programs and five junior college programs, were moved to Lanzhou as a whole from Beijing Railway College (formerly Beijing Railway Management Training Institute, now Beijing Jiaotong University) and Tangshan Railway College (formerly Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Official School, now Southwest Jiaotong University). More than 340 experts and scholars from the Beijing and Tangshan institutes, represented by Lin Dami, Shen Zhiyang, Hu Chunnong, Sun Qiyin and Zhang Dianzhi, came to Lanzhou to teach and successfully enrolled 446 new students that year. In the 1960s, a group of science and technology associate doctors and graduate students who had studied in Jiangsu were transferred to strengthen the teaching staff. The older generation of educators led students from all over the country to work together in the harsh environment of Northwest China, with their wisdom and feelings of building, loving and taking pride in the school, to start the first sixty years of Lanzhou Jiaotong University. In 2000, the university adopted a system of "co-construction by the central and local governments, with local governments taking the lead in management". Lanzhou Railway College was renamed Lanzhou Jiaotong University in 2003. Inheriting the tradition of Beijing and Tang, rooted in Northwest China, the school has blazed a trail of distinctive education centered on rail transit, becoming the cradle of China's railway engineers, and has achieved remarkable results in talent cultivation, scientific research, social service, cultural inheritance and innovation, and international exchange, earning a good reputation. It has now developed into a higher education institution with distinct industry characteristics, outstanding local service capabilities, a domestic reputation and an irreplaceable position in the construction of rail transit in Northwest China.
