The school is committed to cultivating compound talents with humanistic sentiments, international vision, innovative spirit and practical ability. 20 undergraduate programs are offered, covering five disciplines: medicine, science, management, engineering and law. It has 2 national characteristic construction programs, 8 provincial comprehensive reform pilot programs, 3 provincial brand programs, 4 provincial characteristic construction programs and 2 provincial key programs. One national-level excellent resource sharing course and one national-level bilingual teaching demonstration course have been established; There are 24 provincial-level excellent resource-sharing courses and 9 provincial-level excellent video open courses. 1 National virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 1 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration center, and 8 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers.
The university has the qualification to recommend students for postgraduate studies. It has 10 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, including 6 master's degree authorization points for scientific degrees, 4 master's degree authorization points for professional degrees, and 2 second-level discipline master's degree authorization points for independent scientific degrees. 1 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point, 20 second-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, and a first-level discipline (clinical medicine) postdoctoral station. There are more than 10,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students at the university. In the past five years, the overall employment rate of graduates has exceeded 98%.
Over the past six years, the school has undertaken more than 3,000 vertical research projects at or above the municipal level, including the National Science and Technology Support Program. Among them, the number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China has ranked among the top 100 in the country for four consecutive years. 36 national and provincial-level science and technology awards have been received; 4,520 SCI papers have been published in world-renowned journals including Nature Medicine, New Eng J Med, and Lancet (1,656 as the first author). The university hosts six academic journals, among which Chinese Journal of Biomedical Engineering, Chinese Journal of Joint Surgery, and Thrombosis and Hemostasis are core journals of Chinese science and technology, and Journal of Chest Diseases (English Edition) and Annals of Translational Medicine (English Edition) are indexed by SCI and PubMed respectively.
The university has extensive international academic and educational exchanges and cooperation. It is a pilot unit for the reform of internationalized undergraduate education in Guangdong Province and has established stable cooperative and exchange relations with many universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao of China.
Over the course of more than half a century, the school has gradually developed the Guangyi people's spirit of "hard work, down-to-earth, pioneering and enterprising" and established the educational philosophy of "virtue and skill, integration of medicine and literature, teacher-student orientation".
