Jinan University, founded in 1906, is the first state-established institution of higher learning for overseas Chinese in China. Under the leadership of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Jinan University is a key comprehensive university under the "211 Project". The university has 37 colleges, 62 departments, 216 research institutions and 87 laboratories. The school offers a wide range of disciplines, has a strong faculty, and is constantly improving its educational standards, attracting students from home and abroad. As of September 2017, there were 56,001 students of all kinds, including 10,555 full-time doctoral and master's students and 26,254 undergraduate students. The university had a total of 13,909 students from overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries.
Among the faculty of Jinan University in history were a large number of famous scholars such as Ma Yinchu, Zheng Zhenduo, Liang Shiqiu, Wang Yanan, Zhou Gucheng, Qian Zhongshu, Zhou Jianren, Xia Yan, Xu Deheng, Hu Yuzhi, Yan Jici, Chu Tunan, Huang Binhong and Pan Tianshou. Today, the university has a strong faculty, with 2,215 full-time teachers, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 623 doctoral supervisors, 646 professors, and 838 associate professors.
The school actively engages in international academic and educational exchanges. It has signed more than 400 bilateral agreements or established academic exchange relations with higher education institutions and cultural organizations on five continents, and has partners in 52 countries and Hong Kong and Macao regions on five continents. The school has separate offices in Hong Kong and Macau and an educational foundation in Hong Kong.
The school has five campuses in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai. The main campus is located in Guangzhou and covers an area of 1.6952 million square meters. The campus is shaded by green trees, dotted with lakes and willows, and interspersed with various grand buildings of Chinese and Western styles, exuding modernity while also revealing historical and cultural heritage.
