Shantou University

Shantou University was established in 1981 with the approval of The State Council as a comprehensive university. The university has received generous support from Mr. Li Ka-shing, a renowned patriotic figure and international entrepreneur. The Li Ka-shing Foundation has contributed more than 10 billion Hong Kong dollars to Shantou University. At present, Shantou University is a higher education institution jointly built by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the People's Government of Guangdong Province and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. The university covers an area of 1,888.70 mu and has a building area of 568,000 square meters.

Since its establishment, with the support of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, Shantou University has rapidly improved its educational standards. Three key discipline projects have been approved as key discipline construction projects of high-level universities in Guangdong Province, driving the development of other disciplines. Clinical medicine has consistently ranked among the top 1% of ESI global disciplines. Since 2015, it has been consistently ranked 601-800 in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings; Twice in the CWUR World University Rankings (2017, 2018/19), both ranked within the top 1000 globally; In 2017, it made its debut in the QS 2018 Asian University Rankings, tying for 64th of the 103 Chinese mainland universities on the list and ranking 281-290 in the world. It made its debut in the USNews 2018 World University Rankings, ranking 94th out of 136 Chinese mainland universities and 1,055th in the world.

The school has been actively expanding academic exchanges and cooperation, and its internationalization level has been rapidly enhanced. The school has established close academic exchange and cooperation relations with 69 universities in 17 countries and regions including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Ireland, and has formulated and implemented exchange programs for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, a joint venture between Shantou University and Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, was officially approved by the Ministry of Education in December 2016.
