Founded in 1898, Peking University is China 's first national comprehensive university and now has seven faculties: Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Information Science and Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Economics and Management, and Faculty of Medicine. The university now has 55 faculties, 137 bachelor's programs, 286 master's programs, 263 doctoral programs, and 22 disciplines ranked in the top 1% of the world (according to the ESI Basic Science Indicators database). While maintaining its leading position in traditional basic disciplines, Peking University has also made significant progress in applied disciplines and many frontier interdisciplinary fields in recent years. According to December 2024 statistics, Peking University has 16,746 undergraduate students, 17,120 master's students and 15,955 doctoral students; There are 3,220 long-term foreign students from 140 countries studying at the university, including 2,459 degree students. Peking University is renowned for its strong faculty and advanced research facilities. The university has 3,821 full-time faculty members, including 1,730 professors, 1,658 associate professors, 54 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 16 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The university invites a large number of renowned scholars from around the world to give lectures every year. At present, Peking University has seven national key laboratories, five national engineering research centers and six affiliated hospitals.
The library of Peking University is the largest among Asian universities, with a collection of more than 8 million volumes, the largest among Chinese universities. Peking University Library is at the world's advanced level in digital library construction and is a modern large-scale comprehensive literature and information center.
