Xi 'an Jiaotong University

Xi 'an Jiaotong University is one of the earliest established and most renowned institutions of higher learning in China. It is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education.

At the end of the 19th century, after the defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War, the nation was in peril. Sheng Xuanhuai, a renowned industrialist and educator of modern times, held the belief that "self-improvement begins with talent, and talent must start with education," and founded Nanyang Public School in Shanghai in 1896, which was renamed Jiaotong University in 1921. The school adheres to the educational tenet of "practical learning and practical career", and emphasizes the educational goal of "cultivating first-class character, pursuing first-class knowledge, creating first-class career, and becoming first-class talent". By the 1920s and 1930s, it had become a renowned university with a distinctive "science, engineering and management" character, and was hailed as the "MIT of the East". During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the school moved to the concession, relocated to Chongqing, and insisted on running schools in both Shanghai and Chongqing. To defend against foreign aggression, many students put down their pens and fought on the battlefield. On the eve of liberation, teachers and students actively engaged in the democratic revolution and liberation struggle, and the school was hailed as a "fortress of democracy".

In 1955, the Central Committee decided that Jiaotong University would be relocated to Xi 'an; Students and faculty moved to Xi 'an in batches starting from 1956; In 1957, it was divided into two parts of Jiaotong University, Xi 'an and Shanghai, under unified leadership; In 1959, the Xi 'an part of Jiaotong University was renamed Xi 'an Jiaotong University and was listed as one of the sixteen key universities in the country in the same year. In 2000, The State Council decided to merge Xi 'an Jiaotong University, Xi 'an Medical University and Shaanxi University of Finance and Economics to form the new Xi 'an Jiaotong University.

The university was a key construction unit during the Seventh Five-Year Plan and the Eighth Five-Year Plan, and was among the first to be included in the national 211 and 985 projects. In 2017, it was included in the national "Double First-Class" construction list of Class A universities, and eight disciplines were included in the first-class construction disciplines.

The university is a comprehensive research university with a strong focus on science and engineering, covering nine disciplines including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, philosophy and art. It has 27 colleges (departments, centers), 9 undergraduate colleges and 3 affiliated hospitals. There are 6,538 staff members on the payroll, including 3,729 full-time teachers.
