Beijing Forestry University is a key national university directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly built by the Ministry of Education, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and the people 's government of Beijing Municipality. It is among the first batch of key universities under the "211 Project", a pilot university for the "Innovative Platform for Discipline Advantage" project and a university under the "Double First-Class" initiative. The school's history can be traced back to the Forestry department of agriculture at the Imperial University of Peking in 1902. In 1952, the forestry department of Beijing Agricultural University merged with the Forestry Department of Hebei Agricultural College to form Beijing Forestry College. It was listed as a key national institution of higher learning in 1960. It was renamed Beijing Forestry University in 1985. In 1996, it was listed by the state as one of the first batch of key universities under the "211 Project". In 2000, it was transferred from the former State Forestry Administration to the Ministry of Education for direct management and was approved to establish a graduate school. In 2001, it was jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and the State Forestry Administration. In 2008, it became a pilot university for the national "Innovative Platform for Advantageous Disciplines" construction project. In 2012, it led the establishment of China's first collaborative innovation center for forestry - the Collaborative Innovation Center for Efficient Cultivation and Utilization of Forest Resources. In 2017, it was among the first batch of universities to be included in the national "Double First-Class" initiative, with two disciplines, forestry and landscape architecture, selected for the "Double First-Class" initiative. In 2021, the Xiongan campus was approved, becoming one of the first universities to settle in Xiongan. In 2023, with the joint support of the Ministry of Education, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, the university held a conference on high-quality development and set the goal of "building a world-class university serving ecological civilization construction". Construction of the Xiongan campus will commence in 2024, accelerating the formation of a new development pattern of "one university, two campuses and one park".

The school system builds a discipline and professional system that aligns with the "five systems" of ecological civilization. There are 17 colleges, 66 undergraduate programs (including specializations), 25 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 21 master's professional degree authorization points, 8 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 2 doctoral professional degree authorization points, 6 interdisciplinary (including self-established), and 7 postdoctoral research stations. There are two national "Double First-Class" disciplines such as Forestry and landscape architecture, two high-precision and advanced disciplines of Beijing universities such as ecological restoration engineering and urban and rural human settlements ecology and environment, and five interdisciplinary disciplines serving ecological civilization construction such as ecological civilization construction, carbon reduction and carbon sequestration science and engineering, and national park science, which are rated A and above.
