China University of Petroleum (Beijing)

China University of Petroleum (Beijing), formerly known as Beijing Institute of Petroleum, was founded in 1953 based on the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Petroleum Engineering of Tsinghua University, with the addition of some faculty members from Tianjin University, Peking University, etc. It was the first higher education institution of petroleum in new China and laid the foundation for the exploration and development of petroleum higher education in China. The university operates in two locations. The main campus in Beijing is located at the foot of the scenic Jundu Mountain in Changping District, Beijing, covering an area of more than 700 mu. The Karamay campus, which opened in 2015, is located in Karamay City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, known as the "Oil City", covering an area of more than 7,000 mu.

Since its establishment, the university has been a key national leading university in the industry. In the 1960s, it became one of the 64 key institutions of higher learning in the country; Since the restoration of the degree system in the 1980s, it was among the first to be granted the right to confer master's degrees; Since the 1990s, it has been included in the list of universities under the national "211 Project" and the "Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines" project. In 2017, it was included in the national "Double First-Class" initiative.

The university has always been committed to running the university on Chinese soil and has made significant contributions to the development of China's petroleum and petrochemical industry and the construction of an energy power. Since its establishment, it has cultivated more than 300,000 outstanding specialized talents for the country and is known as the "cradle of petroleum talents".

The school has distinctive disciplines and strong academic strength. The school adheres to the discipline construction idea of "strong and excellent, innovative and first-class", builds a discipline system with distinct energy characteristics, forms a discipline ecosystem led by first-class disciplines and coordinated development of key disciplines and basic disciplines, and disciplines and specialties cover the entire chain of the oil and gas industry. It has two national "Double First-Class" disciplines and two Beijing high-precision and cutting-edge disciplines. It has a distinct advantage in the fields of oil and gas science and engineering, oil and gas conversion science and engineering, and is actively laying out clean, low-carbon and intelligent discipline clusters in the fields of carbon neutrality engineering and technology, oil and gas artificial intelligence, etc. Engineering, chemistry, earth sciences, materials science, computer science, environment/ecology, social sciences in general, mathematics, and physics are ranked in the top 1% of ESI globally, with engineering, chemistry, and earth sciences entering 1‰.

Integration of industry and education, all-round education. The main campus has more than 9,000 full-time undergraduate students, more than 8,000 postgraduate students, more than 2,000 doctoral students, and more than 700 international students. The Karamay campus has more than 8,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 600 postgraduate students. The school adheres to the principle of moral education and has established a comprehensive education system that nurtures students in terms of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor, which is characterized by the integration of moral education, general and specialized education, intelligent and green education, and the unity of knowledge and action. There are 21 national first-class undergraduate programs, 20 provincial and ministerial first-class undergraduate programs, 5 national engineering practice education centers, and 2 national virtual teaching and research room construction pilot programs. A group of first-class discipline competitions in the energy field, represented by the China Petroleum Engineering Design Competition, has been established, setting a precedent for national science and technology innovation competitions in the oil and gas field. Selected as a national base for innovative talent cultivation by the Ministry of Science and Technology and a national base for practical education and innovation and entrepreneurship in colleges and universities by the Ministry of Education. Relying on the advantages of industry-university-research cooperation, it has formed a model of cultivating top-notch innovative talents with distinct industry characteristics in the integration of undergraduate and doctoral education and high-level professional talents in the full series of industry-education integration. It is one of the first batch of national pilot universities for comprehensive reform of professional degree postgraduate education, one of the first batch of national pilot universities for reform of master's and doctoral education in engineering, and the first university to build a national college of outstanding engineers in the energy field. Selected into the National Energy Storage Technology Industry-Education Integration Innovation Platform, three bases recognized as National Industry-education integration Demonstration bases, selected as the first chair unit of the Employment and Entrepreneurship Guidance Committee of the Energy and Power industry, graduates are widely welcomed by society and employers, and the employment placement rate of graduates remains high.

The school is strong in talent, with a gathering of distinguished teachers. The school insists on taking talent as the primary resource, deeply implements the strategy of strengthening the school with talent, builds a high-level teaching staff, and forms a talent highland in the field of domestic oil and gas disciplines. The main campus has more than 1,500 staff members, including over 1,000 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, 68% have senior professional titles and 85% have doctoral degrees. The Karamay campus has more than 700 staff members, including 600 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, 52 percent have senior professional titles and 54 percent have doctoral degrees. The school has built a high-level teaching staff with five academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering as the mainstays, 57 national leading talents as the main force, and 58 national young talents as the fresh force. The total number of high-level talents accounts for 11% of the total number of full-time teachers. There are currently two Huang Danyan-style teacher teams in national universities, three innovative research groups funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and three national teaching teams.

Overcome difficulties and strengthen science and technology. As a high-level research university, we insist on taking scientific and technological innovation as the primary driving force for development and serving the major strategic needs of the country as the highest pursuit. In line with the idea of "building big platforms, undertaking big projects, uniting big teams, achieving big results and making big contributions", we will build national strategic scientific and technological forces and serve the construction of the national innovation system. The university ranks among the top universities in the country in terms of the number of research projects per capita, research funds, and especially research awards. It has three national key laboratories, namely Oil and Gas Resources and Engineering, Heavy Oil, and Deep Geothermal Enrichment Mechanism and Efficient Development, and participates in the construction of 13 national innovation platforms, including the National Innovation Center for Oil and Gas Geophysical Exploration Technology and the National Innovation Center for Mine Safety Technology. There are 25 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological innovation platforms, including the Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Production Safety and Emergency Technology and the Joint Laboratory of Unconventional Oil and Gas International Cooperation, as well as 20 branches of key laboratories of China National Petroleum Corporation. The research strengths in the field of oil and gas are prominent. Major achievements have been continuously produced in unconventional, deepwater, deep underground, clean energy, pipeline safety and other fields. Rapid development has been achieved in emerging research fields such as intelligent oil and gas, hydrogen energy, energy storage, CCUS, and it has been selected into the National energy storage technology industry-education Integration Innovation platform. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the university won 18 national science and technology awards, including 6 second prizes of the National Invention Award as the first completing unit, ranking 8th among all universities in the country. The brand journals, Petroleum Science (English Edition) and Journalof Palaeogeography (English Edition), were respectively selected as national leading journals and key journals, and were consecutively selected as China's most internationally influential academic journals.

Open education, bridging China and the world. We have a comprehensive strategic partnership with leading energy enterprises such as China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, China National Offshore Oil Corporation and National Pipeline Network to build an education community and innovation consortium that integrates industry and education. Actively integrating into the construction of Beijing's "Four Centers", fostering and expanding "new industrial clusters", the joint research institute built in the "Energy Valley" of Beijing Future Science and Technology City was selected as a typical case of the "Double Hundred Plan" for school-enterprise cooperation at the China Education Expo. Actively build international exchange and cooperation networks and platforms, propose and initiate the establishment of the World Energy University Alliance, with 32 energy universities from 17 countries across 5 continents participating, elected as the leading unit of the University (youth) working group of the Belt and Road Energy Partnership Cooperation Network, the world's first chair on "Carbon Neutrality and Climate Change Driving Green Transformation" The BRICS Youth Energy Summit and the International Energy Youth Conference were included in the Beijing Declaration of the 14th BRICS Summit and selected as part of Beijing's first Belt and Road National Talent Training Base Project.
