The Central Academy of Drama is the first institution of higher learning for drama education in the People 's Republic of China. It is directly under the Ministry of Education and is the top institution for drama and film art education in China. It is a university designated by the state for the construction of world-class disciplines. It is the headquarters of the China Higher Drama Education Alliance, the Asian Drama Education Research Center and the secretariat of the World Drama Education Alliance. The Central Academy of Drama holds a UNESCO seat on drama education and is a world-renowned art institution.
The history of the Central Academy of Drama can be traced back to the Yan 'an Lu Xun Academy of Arts, which was established on April 10, 1938, and it has a history of more than 70 years.
The Central Academy of Drama has two campuses. The Dongcheng campus is at No. 39, Dongmianhua Hutong, Dongcheng District, Beijing, and the Changping campus is at No. 4, Hongfu Middle Road, Changping District, Beijing. The total area of the two campuses is about 230,000 square meters, and the building area is about 180,000 square meters.
The Central Academy of Drama has departments of performance, directing, stage design, drama literature, Musical Theatre, Peking Opera, Opera, Dance Drama, Puppetry, Drama Education, Drama management, Film and Television. Undergraduate programs include: Performance, Drama and Film Directing, Drama and Film Art Design, Drama and Film Literature, Drama Studies, and Broadcasting and Hosting Arts. The college has first-level discipline points for doctoral and master's degrees in drama and film studies and art theory. The college has postdoctoral research stations.
The Central Academy of Drama has the only national-level teaching team in the field of performance in China, the only national-level characteristic professional construction point in the field of directing, the only national-level experimental zone for innovative talent cultivation mode in musical performance teaching, and the only national-level experimental teaching demonstration center for drama and film. The academy is home to the China Drama Association, the Director Art Committee of the China Drama Association, the International Union of Stage Design, the China Society of Stage Design, the China Center of the International Organization of Stage Design, the China Branch of the International Association of Theatre Critics, the Teaching Professional Committee of the China Musical Theatre Association, the China Research Center for Drama Education in Primary and Secondary Schools, and the China Collaborative Innovation Center for Drama Culture Management.
In its long practice of running the school, the Central Academy of Drama adheres to the principles of realistic aesthetics, inherits the aesthetic traditions of the Chinese nation, draws on the strengths of all, builds a solid foundation and emphasizes practice, and adheres to the school motto of "seeking truth, creation, Perfection", and is committed to cultivating elite talents in drama, film and television art for the country and the world. A considerable number of the academy's graduates have become renowned artists, scholars, professors and writers at home and abroad, making outstanding contributions to the prosperity and development of China's drama and film industry.
