Dalian University of Technology was founded in April 1949 as the College of Engineering of Dalian University; In July 1950, Dalian University was abolished and Dalian University College of Engineering became independent Dalian Institute of Technology; In October 1960, it was designated as a key national university directly under the Ministry of Education; A graduate school was established in April 1986; It was renamed Dalian University of Technology in March 1988; In 1996, the "211 Project" was initiated and Dalian University of Technology was jointly built by the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province and Dalian City. In 2001, the "Project 985" was launched, with the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province and Dalian City focusing on jointly building Dalian University of Technology. In December 2012, the Ministry of Education officially approved the construction of the Panjin campus of Dalian University of Technology; In September 2017, with the approval of The State Council, Dalian University of Technology was included in the list of world-class universities of Class A; In February 2022, it was included in the second round of the national "Double First-Class" initiative.

The university has about 4,500 staff members, including about 3,000 full-time teachers. The school has 13 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Among the full-time teachers, there are more than 940 with senior professional titles and more than 1,250 with associate senior professional titles. At present, the school has established long-term and stable cooperative relations with 338 renowned overseas universities and research institutions in 47 countries and regions. The university has initiated the China University Alliance - Japan National University Alliance, the China-Ukraine University Alliance and the China-Belarus University Alliance, and has joined 21 international university alliances, including the China-Russia University Alliance of Engineering. The university has three Sino-foreign cooperative education institutions (with Ritsumeikan University in Japan, the University of Leicester in the UK, and Belarusian State University) and one Sino-foreign cooperative education program (with the University of California, Irvine in the US). Since 2024, the school has had 3,145 international students, with 57.8% of them being degree students.
