Donghua University is directly under the Ministry of Education and is part of the "211 Project" and "Double First-Class" initiative. Located in Shanghai, China, it has three campuses: Songjiang Campus, Yan 'an Road Campus and Xinhua Road Campus. It is a "Shanghai Garden Unit" and a "Shanghai Civilized Campus", and the Songjiang Campus is a national water conservancy scenic area. Donghua University began enrolling international students in 1954 and was one of the first institutions to do so. It is also a recipient of the Chinese Government Scholarship and the Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship. The university offers 26 doctoral programs, 48 master's programs and 56 undergraduate programs to international students. There are more than 2,200 faculty members and nearly 30,000 students, including more than 2,000 international students from over 100 countries.
Donghua University's strengths lie in disciplines such as textiles, materials, and design. It has two national "Double First-Class" disciplines, namely "Textile Science and Engineering" and "Materials Science and Engineering". Seven disciplines, namely engineering, chemistry, materials science, computer science, mathematics, environmental science and ecology, and biology and biochemistry, have entered the top 1% of ESI globally, with materials science and chemistry entering the top 1‰. Nine specialties, including textile Engineering, are accredited by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development for Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering, and Xuri Business School is accredited by the Association of Mbas and the Association of Graduate Business Schools (AMBA&BGA) for business education.
The school has been vigorously promoting the opening up of education, strengthening international cooperation and exchanges, and actively serving the Belt and Road Initiative of the country. It has joined forces with 40 textile-oriented universities from 21 countries to form the Belt and Road World Textile University Alliance and has established good cooperative relations with more than 200 foreign universities around the world. More than 90 foreign exchange and joint training agreements have been signed with universities and international organizations in more than 20 countries and regions. In collaboration with the Open University of China and the Open University of Kenya, the China-Africa Digital Education Regional Cooperation Center was established, and it was successfully selected as a member university of the "100 China-Africa Universities Cooperation Program" in the field of "Digital education" and a member university of the "China-Africa University Alliance" exchange mechanism. A Confucius Institute with a focus on textile and apparel was established at Moi University in Kenya, and Donghua University Shanghai International College of Fashion and Creativity was jointly founded with the University of Edinburgh to cultivate first-class fashion and creative talents with an international perspective.
