In 1949, it took over and merged with the former private Liaoning Medical College (formerly the Medical School of Shengjingshi Hospital, established in 1883 by medical missionaries sent by the United Presbyterian Church of England), and thus China Medical University was one of the earliest institutions in China to offer Western medicine. Since its establishment, more than 90,000 senior medical professionals have been trained. According to incomplete statistics, more than 100 have held positions above the vice-ministerial level, 9 are ministers and vice-ministers of the Ministry of Health, more than 40 are generals, and 14 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The school has 9,157 staff members on its payroll. All kinds of professional and technical personnel make up 78.82% of the total staff. There are 751 professors, 1,087 associate professors and 1,240 postgraduate supervisors, among whom 448 are doctoral supervisors. The school has 15,548 full-time students, including 1,182 doctoral students, 4,281 master's students (including seven-year programs), 9,081 regular undergraduate students, and 1,153 international students.
The school covers a total area of 1,110,500 square meters and has a building area of 741,300 square meters. The library has a collection of 1.254 million volumes of paper books and 21 terabytes of electronic resources; The Laboratory Animal Department is the host of the Liaoning Provincial Laboratory Animal Quality Inspection Center and the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Transgenic Animal Research. The university hosts 15 academic journals.
The school has established a Sino-British joint college with Queen's University Belfast in the UK, and has established good exchange relations with 87 universities and research institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Canada, Australia, Italy, Denmark, Spain, North Korea, Finland, Macao and Taiwan. Fruitful cooperation with the World Bank (WBG), the Chinese Medical Foundation of the United States (CMB), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and other institutions. A total of 408 internationally renowned experts and scholars have been appointed as honorary titles at the university, and 73 major international cooperation projects have been carried out in recent years, including 37 CMB projects.
