Fudan University

Fudan University, whose name is derived from "The Great Commentary on the Book of Documents", was founded in 1905 as Fudan Public School and was renamed Fudan University in 1917. It was the first institution of higher learning independently established by the Chinese. The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the Medical College of National Fourth Zhongshan University, which was founded in 1927. Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University in 2000. At present, the university has 12 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary studies; In 2021, 20 disciplines of the university were selected for the second round of the "Double First-Class" initiative, an increase of three from the first round.

At present, Fudan University has 40 affiliated colleges and 17 affiliated hospitals. The university offers 83 undergraduate programs, 44 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 47 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points (including first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points), 7 doctoral professional degree authorization points, 40 master's professional degree authorization points and 40 postdoctoral research stations. There are 15,420 regular undergraduate students, 36,012 postgraduate students (including full-time and part-time students from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), and 2,011 degree international students. There are 3,647 teaching and research staff on campus. There are 59 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including dual appointments), 16 senior professors of liberal arts, 9 teachers of professional and technical positions in the field of philosophy and social sciences, and 995 recipients of various national talent programs.

Fudan University has a world-class reputation and ranks among the top 30 in the world in terms of international reputation, ranking third among universities in the Chinese mainland. It has achieved remarkable improvement in the fifth round of national first-level discipline evaluation. All five disciplines - liberal arts, social sciences, science, engineering and medicine - have entered the top 100 in the world. The university has 20 disciplines selected for the second round of the "Double First-Class" initiative, and has taken the lead in launching the first "interdisciplinary" first-level discipline of Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering in the country. Thirteen disciplines were selected for the construction of peak disciplines in Shanghai. Pharmacology & Toxicology, materials science, Chemistry, Molecular biology & Genetics, Microbiology, biology & Biochemistry, Clinical Medicine, Immunology, Environment/Ecology, and Engineering are among the top 1‰ of ESI global disciplines. The university is committed to continuously and steadily contributing to the progress of civilization in its best condition, actively implementing 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, having the highest international influence in sustainable development among Chinese universities, and achieving globally recognized outstanding achievements in areas such as SDG7 (Affordable Clean Energy) and SDG 8 (Decent work and Economic Growth).

There are 10 key research institutes of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education. The China Institute was selected as one of the first batch of national high-end think tank construction pilot units. The School of Marxism was selected as one of the first batch of national key schools of Marxism. The secretariat of the China University Think Tank Forum is located at Fudan. Selected as one of the first batch of universities to cultivate laboratories for philosophy and social sciences under the Ministry of Education.

In recent years, Fudan University has signed cooperation agreements with more than 446 universities and institutions in 53 countries and regions around the world. Its faculty and students travel abroad more than 8,000 times a year, it receives about 5,000 visitors from overseas each year, and holds about 100 international conferences each year.

The university has four campuses in Handan, Fenglin, Zhangjiang and Jiangwan, covering a total area of about 2.3778 million square meters and building area of 2.1481 million square meters.
