Shanghai Ocean University is a multi-disciplinary university with a complete education system, a wide range of disciplines, distinctive educational features, and coordinated development of agriculture, science, engineering, economics, literature, management and other disciplines. The university has 1 national key discipline, 12 provincial and ministerial key disciplines, 5 national characteristic specialties, 3 national excellent courses, 1 national teaching team, 15 Shanghai Education Heights and 1 Shanghai University e-Research Institute. The university has strong research capabilities in areas such as Marine resource development and utilization, genetic breeding, and food processing. Since the 1990s, more than 50 scientific and technological achievements have reached the international leading and advanced level, more than 90 have been pioneered and advanced in China, and more than 40 have won national scientific research projects or achievement awards. The university has made significant contributions in areas such as environmental protection, species conservation, genetic breeding, food processing, Marine resource development and utilization, aquaculture, and agricultural economics and management.
The school has close exchanges and cooperation with universities in the United States, Japan, Russia, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, as well as many international organizations, and has signed cooperation agreements with 73 schools or research institutions in 23 countries. The school exchanges students with many foreign universities. Currently, there are 145 students of all kinds at the school, coming from 18 countries. The university has long been involved in the China-Us Marine Biological Resources Cooperation Program and has established long-term friendly cooperative relations with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Asian Fisheries Society, the International Aquatic Biological Resources Management Centre, etc. Shanghai Ocean University began enrolling international students in 1955 and is a recipient of both the Chinese Government Scholarship and the Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship.
