Shanghai University of Sport was founded in 1952 as East China Institute of Physical Education and was renamed Shanghai University of Sport in 1956. It was the first higher education institution of sport established by the state after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The university was originally a university directly under the State Sports Commission. Since 2001, it has been jointly built by the General Administration of Sport of China and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. Since 2017, it has been continuously included in the national "Double First-Class" initiative. In June 2023, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Shanghai University of Sport.

The school has three campuses in Yangpu, Xuhui and Songjiang, as well as teaching sites in Jiangwan and Huangpu. The school covers an area of over 1,100 mu and has a building area of about 370,000 square meters.

The school became a master's degree-granting institution in 1981 and one of the first doctoral degree-granting institutions among sports colleges in China in 1986. It has now formed a discipline system with sports science as the backbone and high-level cross-integration of science, medicine, literature, engineering, management, law, art and other disciplines. In the fifth round of national discipline evaluation and the second batch of professional degree evaluation, the university achieved excellent results in both "Sports Science" and "Physical Education" professional degrees; In the fourth round of the national discipline evaluation, our school's "Physical Education" received the highest grade of A+. There are currently 24 undergraduate programs. Among them, 13 are first-class undergraduate programs at the national, provincial and municipal levels; There are 19 national first-class undergraduate courses and 34 provincial and municipal ones, basically covering all undergraduate programs of our university. There are five first-level discipline master's degree authorization points in physical education, psychology, journalism and communication, Marxist theory, public health and preventive medicine, and seven professional master's degree authorization points in physical education, medical technology, tourism management, journalism and communication, applied psychology, business administration and translation. There are now first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points in physical education and psychology, and doctoral degree authorization point in physical education. In addition to all the second-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points within the first-level discipline of physical education, there are five second-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, namely, sports management, sports engineering, sports rehabilitation, anti-doping, and sports communication.

The school has a strong faculty, with about 600 full-time teachers. As of now, it is the only sports college in China to have two teacher teams (sports health science and Digital Intelligence Empowering Sports Science and Technology Innovation) shortlisted for the "National University Huang Danyan-style Teacher Team Creation Demonstration Activity". Two Party organizations of faculty and staff have been awarded the title of "National Model Party Branch for Party Building Work". The faculty includes foreign members of the National Academy of Sports Sciences (NAK), independent directors of the International Doping Agency (ITA), senior fellows of the Oregon Institute, chief scientists of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), former presidents of the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Academy of Sports Sciences, and world champions. Emphasizing "both characteristics and quality, and mutual promotion of discipline construction and talent cultivation", we vigorously promote the integration of vocational and general education, the integration of science and education, and the integration of industry and education. In collaboration with the Chinese Basketball Association, the Chinese Athletics Association, the Chinese Badminton Association, the Chinese Gymnastics Association and the Chinese Squash Association, the Chinese Basketball Academy, the Marathon Academy, the Badminton Academy, the Gymnastics Academy and the Squash Academy were established respectively. In collaboration with the Chinese Gymnastics Association and the Chinese Trampoline and Acrobatics Association, the National Youth Training Base for Gymnastics, Trampoline and Rhythmic Gymnastics was established. It is a "National high-level sports reserve Talent Base" for middle and long-distance running. The Shanghai Sport Women's Football Team, which was jointly built with a well-known enterprise, won the championship of the 2nd Asian University Sports Federation Football Asia Cup. The academic innovation level is at the forefront. In recent years, it has won three National Science and Technology Progress Awards and the second prize of Shanghai Technological Invention in 2024. The number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Foundation of China is leading among similar universities. It is the first sports university to receive a key project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and has successively undertaken 14 major projects funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences. It is the project leader and research and development unit of several key projects under the National Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, including "Science and Technology for the Winter Olympics", "Science and Technology Response to Active Health and Aging", and "Science and Technology Support for Social Governance and Smart Society". It has made efforts to promote the transformation of research and innovation paradigms empowered by artificial intelligence and released the country's first large model of artificial intelligence in sports. During the Paris Olympic cycle, we will introduce "3D+AI" sports AI innovations to provide in-depth services for national teams in diving, swimming, track and field, gymnastics, rock climbing, badminton, etc. The project with our school as the backbone was selected as a typical case of smart sports in 2024 jointly released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the General Administration of Sport; The project has been approved for the "Leading Industry Innovation and Development (AI+)" program to promote high-quality industrial development in Shanghai. The school is also the only domestic sports college to be awarded the title of "China's Joint Research and Development Unit for Ice and Snow Science and Technology". As of now, Exercise & Health Sciences (English Edition) has remained in the top 2% of global sports science influence, has been nominated for the Fifth China Publishing Government Award Journal Award, and has consistently ranked first in "China's Most Internationally Influential Academic Journals (Humanities and Social Sciences)". The Shanghai Institute of Sports Science, Psychology and Doping Control has been selected as Class I Peak Discipline, Class I Plateau discipline and Class IV Peak discipline by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission respectively. Serve the building of a strong education nation and establish a strategic partnership with the Chinese Students' Sports Federation; It was the first in the country to release the Chinese children and adolescents' physical literacy evaluation model, the physical health index evaluation model and the youth sports skills level standard, providing important guidance for the reform of education evaluation in China. We serve the construction of a sports power, fully participate in Olympic research and development services, and have training bases for national teams such as 3-on-3 basketball and bobsleigh. Serving the construction of a healthy China, the "Community Sports Health Specialist" program has received praise from all sides, has been included in the national and Shanghai Sports Development "14th Five-Year Plan", and has been selected as one of the "Top Ten Innovative Measures of Shanghai Medical Reform" and "National Pilot Project for Innovative Integration in the Prevention and Control of Major Chronic Diseases", etc. The "exercise for drug rehabilitation" model has been recognized by the Ministry of Justice and transformed into a local standard. There is one high-level think tank of the General Administration of Sport of China, one key think tank of Shanghai, one think tank of Shanghai universities, and one think tank of Marxist theory of Shanghai universities. Take the lead in drafting important policy documents on building a strong sports nation, promoting mass fitness, the sports industry and the five-year plan for sports development in China. Actively serving the high-quality integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region, the Yangtze River Delta Sports Integration Research Center, the Yangtze River Delta Sports Integration Office, and the Yangtze River Delta Sports Industry Collaboration Secretariat are located in our university. It has the only national sports university science and technology park in China.

Build a new high ground for the inheritance of sports culture. The ITTF Museum and the China Table Tennis Museum, which were initiated by international sports organizations, were the first to be introduced. The Wushu Museum, the world 's first museum to fully display the history and culture of wushu, was selected as one of the second batch of practical teaching bases for ideological and political courses in Shanghai colleges and universities. Shanghai Sport (Wushu) was selected as a national base for the inheritance of excellent traditional Chinese culture in ordinary colleges and universities. Set up the Institute of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Traditional Chinese Sports. The Table tennis Museum and the Martial Arts Museum have both been selected as national sports science popularization bases.
