Tianjin, along with Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, is one of the four municipalities directly under the Central Government in China. The city center is a 28-minute high-speed rail ride from Beijing. Tianjin is a national central city, a national historical and cultural city, a modern maritime city, a national advanced manufacturing research and development base, a core area of northern international shipping, a demonstration zone for financial innovation and operation, and the core area of China's major strategy of coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Tianjin Normal University, the inheritor of Tianjin's century-old normal education, has a beautiful ecological campus covering 3,500 mu, including 771 mu of lake wetlands. The university has three faculties, 19 colleges, 74 undergraduate programs, 15 first-level disciplines and professional degree authorization points for doctoral degrees, 31 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, and 19 master's professional degree authorization categories, covering 10 disciplines including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art, and interdisciplinary studies. Selected as one of the first batch of "Demonstration Bases for International Students in China" schools, jointly established the "Tianjin Normal University Institute of International Chinese Language Teacher Education" with the Ministry of Education and the Tianjin Municipal People's Government, and jointly established the "Institute of International Chinese Language Education Development" practice research base with the Center for Language Education and Research of the Ministry of Education Approved as a "China-Asean Education Exchange and Cooperation Base" of the China-Asean Center and established the Tianjin Center for International Chinese Language Education Development. The school has established long-term friendly exchange and cooperation relations with 220 universities, educational institutions and local governments in 39 countries and regions.

The school is a recipient of the Chinese Government Scholarship, the International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship, and the Tianjin Municipal Government Scholarship. The school began its international student education program in 1964. With 60 years of rich experience, it has cultivated more than 60,000 international students from 86 countries and regions, and has produced a large number of typical foreign students who know and love China. The university has five Confucius Institutes and one independent Confucius classroom. The first Confucius Institute in Africa, the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, has become a global model Confucius Institute. One Global Confucius Institute Establishment Award, one Global Model Confucius Institute, three Advanced Chinese Partner Institutions, and eleven Global Advanced Confucius Institutes. Four Chinese language testing centers were jointly established, including the first Chinese language testing center in the country, the first Chinese language testing center at Thanh Dong University in Vietnam, as well as the Chinese language testing center at Hanoi Second Normal University in Vietnam and the Chinese language testing center at Nawamintharat University in Thailand.

The school attaches great importance to international Chinese education, with meeting the fundamental needs of international students as its first working principle, highlighting practical teaching as its characteristic, and professionalizing and professionalizing international exchange work as its working standard. It has established the theory of expression-driven autonomous teaching in international Chinese education and formed a complete set of professional management concepts for international Chinese education. It has established an integrated system of undergraduate, master's and doctoral education in international Chinese education. Zhong Yinghua, the head of the International Chinese Language education discipline, serves as the president of the World Association of Chinese Language Teachers, the most authoritative and influential international academic organization in the world. The 45,600-square-meter International Chinese Language Education Center and the international Students' complex building have been put into use, making it the largest and best-conditioned international Chinese language education base in China. In 2024, Tianjin Normal University successfully led the hosting of the 17th "Chinese Bridge" World Middle School Students Chinese Competition and the 4th Primary School Students Chinese Show and Summer Camp, where 400 contestants and their companions from 102 countries gathered in Tianjin to celebrate the feast of Chinese language learning and exchange.
