The predecessor of Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin Medical College, was founded in 1951 as a higher medical college approved by the former State Council after the founding of the People 's republic of China. Professor Zhu Xianyi, a renowned endocrinologist and medical educator, was the first president of the university. In June 1994, Tianjin Medical College and Tianjin Second Medical College were officially combined to form Tianjin Medical University. In December 1996, it became the only municipal university in Tianjin under the National "211 Project" key construction. In October 2015, it became a university jointly built by the Tianjin Municipal People's Government, the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the Ministry of Education. In September 2017, it was selected as a university for the construction of first-class disciplines.
Tianjin Medical University has been actively involved in China's medical higher education. It was one of the first two medical colleges approved to pilot an eight-year program and one of the first 15 institutions to pilot a seven-year program. The university currently has two campuses, one at Meteorological Terrace Road and the other at Guangdong Road, and six university hospitals. There are 21 undergraduate programs, 18 colleges (departments), and 2 teaching divisions. There are 9,687 full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students, including 5,162 undergraduates, 3,089 postgraduates, 465 doctoral students, and 984 international students. Including the university hospital, the university has 8,189 professional and technical staff of all kinds, including 633 full professors, 1,072 associate professors, and 669 full-time teachers at the main campus.
There are 7 first-level disciplines and 42 second-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees; 11 first-level disciplines and 74 second-level disciplines are authorized for master's degrees; Six postdoctoral research stations. There are 1,034 master's supervisors and 324 doctoral supervisors.
There are 5 national characteristic specialties, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot specialties, 2 national teaching teams, 13 Tianjin teaching teams, 1 national teaching master, 22 Tianjin teaching masters, 7 national excellent courses, 5 national excellent Resource sharing courses, 3 national excellent Video open courses, and 3 National bilingual demonstration courses. 8 brand courses taught in English by the Ministry of Education, 3 National experimental zones for innovative talent cultivation models, 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national bases for extracurricular innovation and practice of college students, and 74 national training programs for college students' innovation and entrepreneurship. In 2002 and 2008, the school passed the Ministry of Education's assessment of the teaching level of undergraduate and seven-year higher medical education with excellent results. In 2012, 2013 and 2014, the school was accredited by the Ministry of Education for nursing, stomatology and clinical medicine. Since 2009, the school has won one first prize and one second prize of national teaching achievements, as well as six first prizes of municipal teaching achievements.
The school officially established the International College of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine in 1997 and was renamed the International Medical College in 2010. International students come from 91 countries, and the scale and quality of international student education rank among the top of medical colleges in the country. "Establishment and Practice of All-English Teaching and Quality Assurance System for Clinical Medicine for International Students" won the first prize of National teaching achievement. The school was recognized by the Ministry of Education as the first English teacher training center for international students in China (medicine).
The school has established academic exchange and cooperation relations with 96 universities and research institutions in 22 countries, and has carried out high-level international cooperation in the fields of medicine and biomedicine. 119 world-renowned medical experts and professors have been appointed as honorary and visiting professors in various disciplines of the school, and the "Foreign Expert Advisory Committee" has been established to promote the internationalization of the school.
