Yunnan Agricultural University

Yunnan Agricultural University was founded in 1938 as the College of Agriculture of National Yunnan University. In 1958, it became independent Kunming Agricultural and Forestry College, and in 1971, it merged with Yunnan Agricultural Labor University to form Yunnan Agricultural University. It became a master's degree-granting institution in 1983, a key provincial university in Yunnan Province in 1993, a doctoral degree-granting institution in 2003, and a postdoctoral research station in 2007. Since 2009, the university has actively adapted to the economic and social development needs of Yunnan region by establishing Yunnan Rural Cadre College, Yunnan Food Safety Management College and Yunnan Plateau Characteristic Agricultural Industry Research Institute. In 2013, it was approved by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology to build the New Rural Development Research Institute of Yunnan Agricultural University.

The school covers an area of 3,803 mu and has a building area of 624,000 square meters. The school has 1,848 staff members, including 1 academician and over 700 teachers with senior professional titles. There are 22,536 full-time students and 8,412 adult education students. It has 22 colleges and has established exchange and cooperation relations with 75 institutions in 23 countries. In 2014, it became a recipient of Chinese government scholarships for international students.

The university has five national-level teaching, research and social service platforms, including the National Engineering Research Center for Applied Technology of Agricultural Biodiversity, the National Demonstration Center for Basic Experimental Teaching of Agricultural Sciences, the State Key Laboratory of Biological Resources Conservation and Utilization of Yunnan Province and Ministry, and the China-Asean Education and Training Center. Professor Li Zhengyou's team was the first in China to achieve the "three-line" matching of hybrid japonica rice, won the National Science Conference Award, and set a world record of 1,108.55 kilograms per unit yield of hybrid japonica rice; Professor Zeng Yangzhi's team has spent 35 years studying the inbred line of Xishuangbanna miniature pigs and has bred 28 generations, which is at the international leading level; Professor Sheng Jun's team focused on the development and utilization of Yunnan's characteristic biological resources and provided important technical support for the transformation and upgrading of Yunnan's plateau characteristic agriculture in the fields of agricultural big data and big health foods such as Pu 'er tea; Professor Wei Hongjiang's research team, in collaboration with American scientists, successfully cloned the world's first endogenous retrovirus-active inactivated pigs, made several breakthroughs in xenotransplantation research, and the research paper was published in the international academic authoritative journal Science.
