Qingdao University was founded in 1909. It was formed in 1993 through the merger of the former Qingdao University, Qingdao Medical College, Shandong Institute of Textile Technology and Qingdao Teachers College. After years of development, Qingdao University has grown into a large comprehensive university with a wide range of disciplines including natural sciences and humanities and social sciences. It has 2 national key disciplines, 1 Shandong Province First-Class Discipline Construction "811" Project B-class potential discipline, 1 Shandong Province High-level Discipline Peak Discipline, 4 advantageous and characteristic disciplines, 3 cultivated disciplines, 8 Shandong Province first-class disciplines, 20 Shandong Province key disciplines, and 2 Qingdao City Industry-Education Integration Demonstration disciplines; Academic influence ranks 412th globally, engineering, materials science and chemistry are among the top 1‰ globally, and 16 disciplines are among the top 1% globally; 24 subjects are included in the 2024 Shanghairanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects; 28 subjects are included in the 2025 Shanghairanking Best Chinese Subjects Ranking; 33 subjects are included in the U.S.News2025-2026 World University Subject Rankings.

Qingdao University was among the first among Chinese universities to propose an open education strategy, fully promoting international educational exchanges and cooperation, and has developed an internationalized educational feature. The university has established exchange and cooperation relations with more than 232 universities and related institutions in 38 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, etc. It has achieved substantive cooperation such as mutual exchange of teachers and students and joint training with foreign partner universities. Each year, the school hires more than 50 long-term foreign experts and teachers and over 100 short-term foreign experts. Nearly 100 scholars and administrators are sent abroad each year for study, research, teaching and work, significantly enhancing the ability of teachers and students to participate in international academic exchanges and cooperation.

Qingdao University has been recruiting international students since 1987 and is one of the universities approved by the Ministry of Education of China to admit international students. In 2004, Qingdao University was designated as a "National Base for Chinese Language Education" by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of China, becoming one of more than ten universities in the country to undertake the task of Chinese language education. Since 1987, Qingdao University has been recruiting international students. It has a distinct advantage in international student education and is a recipient of the Confucius Institute Scholarship, the Chinese Government Scholarship and the Shandong Provincial Government Scholarship for Foreign Students. In 1997, Qingdao University was designated as a test center for the National Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), and in early 2014, it was approved as a "demonstration base for International Students" by the Ministry of Education. In October 2016, it became one of the first 27 universities in the country to pass the national "Quality of Education in China" certification.

Qingdao University has a wide range of disciplines, admits international students in all majors, and has an international education college dedicated to teaching Chinese as a foreign language, with obvious advantages in international student education. In recent years, the number of international students applying to study at Qingdao University has been increasing, ranking among the top universities in Shandong Province. The School of International Education at Qingdao University has excellent teaching staff, with both full-time and part-time teachers holding certificates of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Advanced facilities, the International Exchange complex for international students integrates accommodation, meals and other functions. The college currently offers master's programs in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, undergraduate programs in Chinese language, advanced studies in Chinese language, and short-term visiting studies.

Since 2006, Qingdao University has been offering a six-year English-taught MBBS program. Hundreds of international students from India, Thailand, Nepal, Tanzania and other countries are now enrolled in the program.
