Ningbo University is a new local comprehensive university that has grown up during the reform and opening up. Founded in 1986 with a donation from the world's shipping magnates, Mr. Paul Pao, and the name was inscribed by Comrade Deng Xiaoping. In 2012, it became a university jointly built by Zhejiang Province, the Ministry of Education and Ningbo City; Selected as one of the first batch of key construction universities in Zhejiang Province in 2015; In 2017, it was included in the National "Double First-Class" initiative. Located in the north District of Ningbo Higher Education Park, the university now covers an area of 3,551 mu, with a total building area of more than 1.241 million square meters. It is situated along the banks of the Yongjiang River, with shady trees, flocks of egrets, lush grass and elegant buildings, making it an excellent place for study and research. There are 16,298 full-time undergraduate students, 6,719 postgraduate students of all kinds, 2,651 international students (including 1,668 degree students), and 15,476 students in higher education continuing education. There are 2,720 faculty members, including more than 1,750 full-time teachers. Among them, 390 have senior professional titles, 790 have associate senior professional titles, and 1,030 have doctoral degrees. Ningbo University now has 21 colleges and has 7 provincial first-class A-class disciplines and 6 provincial first-class B-class disciplines. According to ESI data, engineering, clinical medicine, chemistry and materials science are among the top 1% of academic institutions in the world. There are 2 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 14 second-level discipline doctoral programs, 3 postdoctoral research stations, 19 first-level discipline master's programs, 17 professional master's programs (including the engineering master's field), and 75 undergraduate programs. The school has been vigorously promoting its internationalization process and has established cooperative and exchange relations with more than 170 institutions in over 70 countries. In collaboration with the University of Angers in France, it has established one Sino-foreign cooperative education institution. Currently, there are Sino-foreign cooperative education programs such as Sino-Australian MBA, Sino-US undergraduate Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Sino-Canadian Humber program, ACCA/CPA, and Indonesian "2+2" undergraduate double degree. It offers an all-English major in international business administration, with 16 international programs at the undergraduate, 16 master's and 2 doctoral levels. Confucius Institutes have been established in collaboration with the University of Iceland and Tamataf University in Madagascar.

The university has increasingly frequent exchanges with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and has carried out intercollegiate academic and student exchanges and cooperation with the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, etc. It has signed intercollegiate academic exchange and cooperation agreements with 25 Taiwanese universities, including Fu Jen Catholic University, Ocean University, Yunlin University of Science and Technology and Soochow University. In 1993, it set a precedent for exchanges and visits between college students from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, with 24 such visits between Ningbo and Taiwan. The exchange and study program between Ningbo and Hong Kong students with the Chinese University of Hong Kong was included in the Ministry of Education's "Ten Thousand Talents Program".
