About the university

The west lake glows with gold and ripples with clear water, Elephant Mountain is green and dotted with white egrets.

The predecessor of the China Academy of Art was the National Academy of Art. In 1928, Mr. CAI Yuanpei, then dean of the Graduate School, chose the West Lake in Hangzhou to establish the first comprehensive national higher art institution - the National Academy of Fine Arts, thus opening a new chapter in higher art education in China. As the first national higher art institution with the most complete disciplines and the largest scale in the country, the China Academy of Art has moved its location and changed its name several times in its more than 90 years of development, from the National Academy of Art, the National Hangzhou Art College, the National Art College, the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts to the China Academy of Art. Throughout this process, two distinct academic lines have been interwoven: one is the idea of "integration of Chinese and Western cultures" represented by its first president Lin Fengmian, and the other is the idea of "innovation of tradition" represented by Pan Tianshou. They regarded academia as a public tool, encouraged each other, and did not contradict each other, creating a relaxed environment conducive to the vigorous innovation of art and the healthy development of humanities. It has become the most important tradition and feature of the school.

As a research and teaching university, China Academy of Art has always been at the forefront of the art of The Times, with a sense of historical mission and responsibility to revitalize the art of the nation, adhering to the school motto of "Be vigorous, be respectful, be Inclusive, Be far-reaching", advocating the academic thought of "diversity and interaction, harmony and diversity", and creating an environment for talent cultivation that "integrates character and learning, art and theory, ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign", Centering on the two core tasks of "building a world-class fine arts discipline characterized by Oriental studies and establishing a new humanistic education system with artistic creation as the core and social aesthetic education as the responsibility", the campus is updated, the ideas are inherited, the disciplines are expanded, the departments are reorganized, and a practical teaching system is established with "work in hand, read to nourish the mind" and "the people's heart, beauty in harmony". Promote the spirit of philosophy and craftsmanship, build the vision of the university, and cultivate virtuous and talented individuals who are well-versed in both character and learning, art and science, ancient and modern, and Chinese and foreign cultures.

China Academy of Art is a university jointly built by the People's Government of Zhejiang Province and the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It ranks first among all art colleges in China in terms of discipline and professional construction achievements: the school and the discipline of fine arts have been selected for the national "Double First-Class" first-class discipline construction for two consecutive rounds; In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, Fine Arts and Design received an A+ rating (tied for first place in the country), Art theory received an A- rating, and Drama and Film studies received a B+ rating; In the fifth round of national discipline evaluation, it achieved excellent results and made steady progress; In the "Double Ten Thousand" initiative, 26 out of 29 undergraduate programs were designated as national first-class undergraduate programs, and 2 were approved as provincial first-class undergraduate programs. At present, there are three postdoctoral research stations in Fine arts, design, and art theory.

As the first national civilized campus unit, the campus covers more than 1,230 mu and spans Hangzhou and Shanghai. It has five campuses: Nanshan, Xiangshan, Zhangjiang, Liangzhu and Xianghu. The Nanshan campus, which was built in 2003, has achieved the modern interpretation of the ink Art Academy. The Xiangshan campus, which was put into use in 2007, has given birth to the visual shaping of the art home. The Liangzhu campus was put into use in 2021. The ingenious campus has become a new calling card of Hangzhou, a city of history and culture. There are more than 10,000 students and about 1,000 staff members.

Climb the heights of art and take on the mission of The Times. Carry forward the Chinese spirit in the grand picture of world art, build new peaks of literature, art and academia in the new era, strive unremittingly to cultivate socialist builders and successors who are well-rounded in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor, and make greater contributions to creating a pioneer province of socialist modernization, building a modern socialist country in all respects, and realizing the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!
