Chongqing Jiaotong University is a multi-disciplinary university with a strong focus on transportation and engineering. In 1960, Chongqing Transportation College was established, and the civil engineering department of Chengdu Institute of Technology, the metallurgy department of Sichuan Institute of Metallurgy, and the hydraulic engineering department of Wuhan Institute of Water Transport were successively incorporated. In 2006, it was renamed Chongqing Jiaotong University. In 2000, the university was transferred from the Ministry of Transport to Chongqing Municipality and is now a university jointly built by the Ministry of Transport and Chongqing Municipality.

The conditions for running the school have been improving. It has three campuses, namely Nan 'an, Shuangfu and Daping, covering nearly 3,000 mu, with over 740,000 square meters of school buildings. It houses 4.42 million volumes of paper and electronic literature, 1,501 kinds of periodicals and magazines, and 101 Chinese and foreign databases. The total value of teaching and research equipment is 447 million yuan. It has one national and five municipal experimental teaching demonstration centers.

The teaching staff is of high quality. There are 2,023 faculty members, including 1,366 full-time teachers, 680 with senior professional titles, and more than 120 national and provincial-level talents such as Changjiang Scholars, "Thousand Talents Program", "Ten Thousand Talents Program" Leading talents in science and technology innovation, "Thousand Talents Project" National candidates, "Ten Thousand Talents Project" of the Ministry of Transport, and "Ba Yu Scholars" of Chongqing. More than 150 specially-appointed or part-time professors, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, prominent entrepreneurs, and engineering masters.

The disciplines and specialties are distinctive in transportation. There are three first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points in transportation engineering, water conservancy engineering, and management science and engineering, three postdoctoral research stations in civil engineering, transportation engineering, and water conservancy engineering, 14 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, etc. There are 18 colleges such as the College of Civil Engineering, the College of River and Sea, and the College of Transportation. There are 61 regular undergraduate programs. Three national characteristic specialties, namely civil engineering, Port, Waterway and coastal engineering, and transportation, have been certified as engineering education specialties. Seven specialties, including water conservancy and hydropower engineering, have been approved as pilot specialties under the Ministry of Education's "Outstanding Engineers Education and Training Program". There are 15 characteristic specialties and 7 characteristic discipline clusters under Chongqing's "Three Special Action Plan".

The reform of education and teaching has been deepened. Optimize and improve the collaborative mechanism of education and teaching, innovate life education, expand practical platforms, highlight the "transportation +" training characteristics, constantly innovate talent cultivation models, build "innovation and entrepreneurship parks", and launch experimental classes such as "MAO Yisheng Class", "Talent Class", "Outstanding Engineer Class", "Overseas Project Management Talent Class", "CIMA Class", and "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Class". There are 27,757 full-time students, including 23,846 undergraduate students. A total of more than 150,000 talents of all kinds and levels have been trained. The initial employment rate of undergraduate graduates has exceeded 90% for 19 consecutive years, and it has been selected as one of the first batch of "National Model Universities for Graduate Employment" and "National Model Universities for Innovation and Entrepreneurship".

It has strong capabilities in scientific and technological innovation. It has three national-level platforms, including the National Engineering Research Center for Inland Waterway Improvement, the Cultivation Base of the State Key Laboratory of Mountain Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, and the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Transportation Civil Engineering Materials. There are 33 provincial and ministerial platforms such as the Key Laboratory of Bridge Structure Engineering in the transportation industry, the Key Laboratory of Water Conservancy and Transport Engineering of the Ministry of Education, and the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Transportation System and Safety in Mountainous Cities, as well as more than 20 research and development institutions such as the Southwest Water Transport Science Research Institute and the Desert Soilization Research Institute. It has achieved a number of influential results in the fields of mountain Bridges and tunnels, roadbeds and pavements, inland waterways and ports, monorail transportation, and transportation and logistics, and has won 12 national Science and Technology progress Awards and national invention awards, as well as over 300 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards. Academic periodicals such as Applied Mathematics and Mechanics and Journal of Chongqing Jiaotong University (Natural Science Edition and Social Science Edition) have been published publicly.

International exchanges and cooperation have been effectively advanced. The initiative established the Belt and Road China-Poland University Alliance, is a core member of the China-Russia Transport University Alliance, opened the Confucius Institute in Benin, has the European Research Center and Benin Research Center registered with the Ministry of Education, and conducts exchanges and cooperation with more than 50 overseas universities in Europe, the United States and other regions. It offers a bachelor's degree in teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and five all-English programs. It is a commissioned institution of the Chinese Government Scholarship and recruits international students from all over the world.
