1. School profile

The school was founded in 1956 when Shanghai First Medical College (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University) was relocated to Chongqing. It was originally named Chongqing Medical College and was renamed Chongqing Medical University in 1985. It was one of the first institutions approved by The State Council's Academic Degrees Committee to confer doctoral and master's degrees, one of the first demonstration bases for international students approved by the Ministry of Education, and became a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission and the Chongqing Municipal People's Government in 2015.

The university consists of the Yuanjiagang Campus in Yuzhong District and the Jinyun Campus in Chongqing University Town, covering a total area of 2,650 mu. The campus is beautiful and picturesque. There are 27,724 full-time students on campus, including 1,601 doctoral students, 7,249 master's students, 18,044 undergraduate students, 331 junior college students (supporting minority programs), and 499 international students.

The university has 22 colleges (departments) and offers 36 undergraduate programs. There are 19 national first-class undergraduate programs and 28 Chongqing first-class undergraduate programs. Clinical medicine, stomatology, nursing, traditional Chinese medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, anesthesiology, medical imaging, pharmacy, clinical pharmacy and other specialties have been accredited by the Ministry of Education. It has 1 National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Center, 3 National Experimental Teaching demonstration centers, 1 National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center, 14 national first-class courses, 1 national course-based ideological and political demonstration course, 4 national Excellent Resource sharing courses and 3 national excellent Video open courses.

There are 2,497 full-time teachers, among whom 1,690 are senior professional and technical personnel. There are 432 doctoral supervisors and 1,598 master's supervisors. In recent years, the school has vigorously implemented the strategy of strengthening the school with talents, recruited high-level talents from overseas, introduced several talent teams of international standards in a systematic manner, strengthened the guidance and cultivation of local talents, gradually built a good talent ecosystem that attracts both local and distant talents, and formed a strong driving force for promoting the development of the school. At present, there are 83 national-level talents such as Chinese Academy of Engineering academicians (hired), overseas high-level talents, Changjiang Scholars, and Distinguished Young Scholars, and more than 1,470 provincial and ministerial-level talents of all kinds. There are now 8 postdoctoral research stations, with over 970 postdoctoral researchers in the stations. The role of the talent base and faculty reservoir is increasingly prominent, and the vitality of the talent team is constantly enhanced.

Over the past five years, the university has made breakthrough progress in scientific and technological innovation: it has undertaken more than 4,500 research projects at all levels with a total funding of about 1.1 billion yuan, including 49 national major and key projects with a total funding of 215 million yuan; 11,810 SCI papers have been published, with an average annual growth rate of 24.57 percent. Many achievements have been published in top international journals such as The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, Cell, Journal of the American Medical Association, Nature Medicine; 54 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards, 5 first prizes of Chongqing Science and Technology Awards, and 2 outstanding contributions to Chongqing Science and Technology Awards; The self-developed HIFU knife high-intensity focused ultrasound tumor treatment system was selected for the National Museum; A number of achievements, including the COVID-19 test kit and the hepatitis B antigen test kit, have entered the stage of clinical transformation. The school attaches great importance to the construction of high-level scientific and technological innovation platforms as an important means to build national strategic scientific and technological forces. 43 new national/provincial and ministerial-level scientific research platforms have been added, bringing the total to 90 (including 7 national platforms), providing solid support for major scientific and technological breakthroughs.

The school actively conducts domestic and international exchanges and cooperation, and has established cooperative relations with 56 educational or medical institutions in 23 countries and regions in Europe, Asia, North America and Oceania, including world-renowned universities such as the University of Leicester in the UK, Dartmouth College in the US, the University of Strasbourg in France, and the National University of Singapore; The Chongqing Medical University - University of Leicester Joint College, in collaboration with the University of Leicester, is the only Sino-foreign cooperative education institution in the central and western regions of China that focuses on medicine and offers clinical medicine. At the same time, it collaborates with "Double First-Class" universities such as Fudan University and Southwest University to jointly train long-term medical students.

The university has 15 affiliated hospitals. The First Affiliated Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital and the Children's Hospital have been consistently ranked among the top 100 in Fudan University's "National Hospital Comprehensive Ranking" for nearly 10 years. The affiliated hospitals have one national clinical research center and one national Regional medical center, and 53 national key clinical specialties have been approved. The hospital has more than 20,800 beds, with an annual outpatient volume of nearly 21.44 million and an annual discharge volume of nearly 1.01 million.
